When I Work Announces Martin Hartshorne as New CEO

Founder Chad Halvorson to serve as Chief Experience Officer, Board Chair

Minneapolis, Minn. – July 27, 2020 – When I Work, a market leader in hourly workforce management SaaS (Software as a Service) with 150,000 workplace partners worldwide, announced its first significant change to its executive leadership team since its founding in 2010. Martin Hartshorne has been appointed as CEO and will lead the company through its next phase of growth. Hartshorne is an accomplished entrepreneur and executive with more than 20 years of experience in workforce management solutions for hourly teams. He will also join When I Work’s board of directors. Company founder Chad Halvorson, who has been the company’s CEO since 2010, will now serve as When I Work’s first-ever Chief Experience Officer, focusing his efforts on driving a unified brand experience across all customer touchpoints. Halvorson will also chair the company’s board.

“Over the last 10 years, I’ve led When I Work from its humble startup beginnings to its place as a multi-million dollar category leader with over 100 employees and more than 1 million active users worldwide. We’ve experienced tremendous growth over the last few years, and we now have a massive opportunity to invest in outstanding leadership to propel us further into the future”, said Halvorson. “As I looked at the future of When I Work and how we position the company for its next phase of growth, it became clear that it was time for me to pass the baton to someone who could bring new skills and experiences to the table. Martin’s deep domain experience, founder journey and proven track record of success as an outstanding leader are exactly what When I Work needs to take full advantage of the opportunity ahead. I couldn’t be more excited for Martin to join the team.”

Hartshorne comes to When I Work after serving as Chief Strategy Officer of Ultimate Software, where he spent six years as a leader helping grow the company from $350 million in revenue to $1.3 billion and more than tripling the number of employees worldwide. In 2019, Hartshorne helped lead the sale of Ultimate Software to a private equity consortium for $11 billion and in early 2020 he played a leading role in the merger of Ultimate Software with Kronos, Inc. Prior to Ultimate Software, Hartshorne was the founder and CEO of EmployTouch Inc., creator of a tablet-based hardware/software solution for labor data collection, employee self-service and collaboration in hourly workforces. Before that, Hartshorne spent seven years in a variety of leadership roles at Workbrain, Inc., providing workforce management solutions to large global enterprises.

“I’m honored to be joining When I Work at such an important point in its journey,” said Hartshorne. “Chad and his team have built a successful company with a solid foundation, stellar reputation and near limitless opportunities for growth. Chad and I share a strong cultural alignment; we know our job is to take care of our team and our customers. I’ll be focusing on scaling so we can meet the clear demand for our products, and innovating further so we can help more workplaces around the world work better together.”
